| Vines are a welcome
addition to the garden, not as a stand alone feature, but giving it an
additional dimension or finished look. By combining vines with the
features found in many yards such as fences, walls, rock features or a
trellis, we can create a more attractive landscape. You need to ask
yourself what you wish the vine to accomplish in your garden. Is it to
serve as a focal point, a background for other plantings, or a camouflage
for something you consider to be an eyesore? Do you want it to provide
food for yourself or any particular variety of wildlife. What kind of
climber do you need: twining (honeysuckle), tendrils (sweet pea, clematis),
grasping (Ivy, Virginia Creeper), leaners or drapers (Nasturtiums).
After a vine is established, most benefit from an annual spring
fertilization with an all-purpose fertilizer. |
